Description

Philip K. Dick’s The Variable Man contains one short novel and four novellas. The title story being set in a future where Earth is preparing for a massive interstellar war. The protagonist, Thomas Cole, is a time-displaced repairman from the past who becomes a critical variable in the complex military calculations.

His unpredictability and ability to fix things threatens the carefully planned war strategies.

The story explores themes of technological determinism, free will, and the impact of an individual on large-scale systems. It’s classic PKD, blending philosophical speculation with speculative fiction and challenging readers’ perceptions of time, technology, and human agency. Basis for the movie “The Minority Report”.

Tough to find in better condition as most Ace books were read to death.

That’s metaphorical, of course.
