Description

The gem in this issue? “Edgar & Maryjane Crump” by Robert Crumb, printed here for the first time.

This full-page strip is featured, and it exemplifies Crumb’s distinctive style, blending satire and social commentary.  Crumb’s work during this period often delved into the complexities of societal norms, personal freedom, and the burgeoning counterculture movement. His contributions to The East Village Other were instrumental in shaping the underground comix movement of the 1960s. “Edgar & Maryjane Crump” has been reprinted in The Complete Crumb Comics Volume 4.

Other highlights include:

  • “We Are All Viet Cong”: An article by Ray Mungo.
  • “How To Grow Psilocybe Mushrooms”
  • “The Rediscovery of America (Part 3)”: A piece by Dr. A. Reza Araseth.
  • “Davinci Was a Mechanic”: An article by Steve Kraus on Richard Newsteder and East Village artist Ricky Skaggs.
  • Full back page ad for the Oct 28 Procol Harum show.

R. Crumb’s Edgar & Maryjane Crump from 1967: proving that even back then, love, paranoia, and weed were the ultimate NYC trifecta. Edgar’s high as a kite, Maryjane’s got her head in the clouds, and together they make one functional hippie.
