Description

Fielding Dawson (1930–2002) was an American writer, painter, and educator, celebrated for his contributions to avant-garde literature and his association with the Beat Generation and Black Mountain College. Known for his autobiographical fiction and poetic prose (The Black Mountain Book, Krazy Kat/The Unveiling and Other Stories, Virginia Dare, and Tiger Lilies), Dawson’s work often explored themes of art, love, and the human experience through a deeply personal lens.

Dawson was also a talented collage artist, painter and illustrator, deeply influenced by Abstract Expressionism. His visual art complemented his literary work, reflecting a shared focus on spontaneity and emotional resonance.

A Space is a Canadian artist-run center located in Toronto, Ontario. It originated as the Nightingale Arts Council in 1970 and was officially founded in 1971. The name “A Space Gallery” was first used when the gallery established itself at 85 St. Nicholas Street. This reading took place in the 70’s, but I can’t find anything else on it…except Saturday May 26 was either 1973 or 1979 — probably the latter.
