Description

The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) is a major motorsports organization in the United States that has been organizing competitive auto races since 1944. Its events span numerous disciplines, from professional road racing to amateur and grassroots motorsport competitions.

Summit Point Motorsports Park (formerly Summit Point Raceway) opened in 1969. Located in Summit Point, West Virginia, the track was initially designed to serve as a testing facility for high-performance vehicles and quickly became popular for regional and national motorsports events. The track was founded by businessman Bill Scott, who envisioned a venue for road racing, testing, and driver training.

This original pen-and-ink flyer was created for the SCCA “Enduro Program”: a long-distance, team-based race where strategy, endurance, and teamwork are key. These SCCA events often ranged from 4 to 24 hours, such as the “12 Hours at the Point”; or, as this flyer promotes, a regional 6-hour endurance race. The artist’s hand-drawn illustration of a race car (a 1965–1966 Ford Mustang Fastback?) speeding down the track reflects a vintage, grassroots motorsports culture along with the various racing elements like tires, gas cans, and pit lane tools emphasizing the endurance nature of the event — when teams had to strategize on refueling and repairs. Given the SCCA’s active history with endurance racing, this event was likely part of their push to develop regional motorsport talent and showcase endurance racing skills.

Flyers like these were common in promoting events during the pre-digital era when local communities and word-of-mouth advertising were essential. What’s not-so-common is the original, hand-drawn flyer (along with the accompanying distributed flyer) being offered for sale.
