Description

Hunter S. Thompson’s article titled “The Battle of Aspen” is featured, with the cover teaser “Freak Power in the Rockies.” This piece delved into the 1969 mayoral race in Aspen, Colorado, focusing on the candidacy of Joe Edwards, a lawyer and non-conformist resident. Thompson, who became the de facto campaign manager for Edwards, detailed the campaign’s efforts to rally support from the local counterculture community, referred to as “Freak Power.” The article also outlined the platform Thompson would later adopt during his own 1970 run for Sheriff of Pitkin County.

Although both campaigns were ultimately unsuccessful, they highlighted the potential influence of marginalized groups in local politics. The article was later reprinted under the title “Freak Power in the Rockies” in Thompson’s collection, The Great Shark Hunt.

Also featured is a lengthly article on the “Tattoo Renaissance” — “which is going on”.
