Description
Ed Sanders, a poet, musician (of The Fugs), and author, wrote extensively about Bobby Beausoleil due to Beausoleil’s connection to the Manson Family and the broader countercultural and criminal intersections that intrigued Sanders as a chronicler of the 1960s. Sanders is best known for his book The Family (1971), one of the earliest detailed accounts of the Manson Family’s crimes.
This issue also covers “Performance”, the British crime drama film starring Mick Jagger; Jerry Rubin, Paul McCartney’s first solo record, and Harlan Ellison. And, of course, from the cover: “The Danes have legalized pornography in Denmark and now, given the constitutional right to report what is happening in Denmark and the case law that has made it difficult to define obscenity, it’s all hanging out in motion picture theaters throughout Los Angeles.”
This issue predates “DeepThroat” by two years and might be one of the earliest examples of any sort of media — mainstream or “underground” — covering adult entertainment. Oh, and did I mention the terrific ads that litter almost every single page?
