Description

Jimi Hendrix passed away on Friday, September 18, 1970, in London, England. He died at the Samarkand Hotel, located at 22 Lansdowne Crescent, Notting Hill. This picture of the exterior of The Fillmore East was made that following week.

The Fillmore East, located in Manhattan’s East Village, was a legendary music venue opened by promoter Bill Graham in 1968. Dubbed the “Church of Rock and Roll,” it hosted iconic acts; not only Hendrix, but Janis Joplin, and The Grateful Dead — among hundreds of others — performed there. Closing in 1971, its legacy defines that counterculture era.

I purchased this picture from the photographer in his little shop in the East Village years ago; and now, for the life of me, I can’t remember his name. Cause that’s how cool I am. :/
