Kinsey Millhone is a fictional private investigator and the protagonist of Sue Grafton’s “Alphabet Series” of mystery novels, which began with A is for Alibi (1982) and concluded with Y is for Yesterday (2017). Kinsey, a tough, independent, and resourceful detective, operates in the fictional California town of Santa Teresa, modeled after Santa Barbara.
Grafton crafted Kinsey as a no-nonsense, sharp-witted loner with a dry sense of humor. She often works on cases involving murder, missing persons, or personal disputes, narrated in the first person.
