Description
The 150 Mile Jimmy Bryan Memorial Race was held on March 28, 1965, at the Phoenix International Raceway. It marked the opening race of the 1965 USAC Championship Car season. The race was named in honor of Jimmy Bryan, a celebrated American race car driver and three-time National Champion, who tragically lost his life in a racing accident in 1960.
The 1965 season was notable for several reasons: The Jimmy Bryan Memorial Race served as the inaugural event of the 1965 USAC Championship; the season featured a mix of oval tracks, road courses, and hill climbs, including the Hoosier Grand Prix, which was the first Championship Car event held on a road course since 1937; finally, the 1965 USAC National Champion was Mario Andretti, who would go on to become one of the most successful and versatile drivers in motorsport history.
Souvenir programs are of significant interest to motorsport enthusiasts and historians. Like most, this one includes detailed information about the event; driver profiles (A.J. Foyt and Art Arfons); and really cool advertisements from the era, offering a glimpse into the racing culture of the 1960s — a tangible connection to the rich history of American motorsports.
