Description

Andy Warhol’s film *** (1967), often referred to as “The 24-Hour Movie”, is one of his most ambitious avant-garde projects. True to Warhol’s penchant for pushing cinematic boundaries, the film spans a continuous 24 hours and consists of various segments that highlight his interest in raw, unfiltered human behavior.

Utilizing techniques such as static framing, extended takes, and improvisation, *** explores themes of voyeurism, celebrity, and the mundane. Though rarely shown due to its extreme length, the film challenges traditional notions of storytelling and viewer endurance, embodying Warhol’s belief that art should provoke, engage, and reflect everyday life in its entirety.

  • “Pop, Rock and Jelly” by Jules Freeman: An exploration of New York City’s fast-paced music scene, discussing the urgency and excitement surrounding performances and the challenges of keeping up with the city’s relentless tempo.
  • “Andy’s Gang Bang” by Dick Preston: delves into ***, among other things avant-garde film and Warhol.
  • Revolutions Per Minute by Jerry Rubin: Rubin, a prominent anti-war activist and co-founder of the Youth International Party (Yippies), engaged in a debate with Fred Halstead, a leader of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) and the SWP’s 1968 presidential candidate.
  • Super cool full page ad for Van Dyke Parks’ newly-released “Song Cycle”!

The East Village Other‘s commitment to covering the countercultural movements, music scenes, and political discourses that defined the late 1960s is what makes these essential.
