Description

The High Window is Chandler’s third novel featuring the iconic private detective Philip Marlowe. First published by Knopf in 1942, the story is set in 1940s Los Angeles and follows Marlowe as he is hired by a wealthy widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Bright Murdock, to recover a valuable rare coin known as the Brasher Doubloon. As Marlowe delves deeper into the case, he uncovers a web of deceit, greed, and murder, encountering a range of intriguing individuals, including Mrs. Murdock’s dysfunctional family, a sinister gangster, and a seductive femme fatale.

In 1940 and under the leadership of Ben Zevin, The World Publishing Co. introduced its Tower Books imprint, offering affordable (.49 cents) hardcover editions to the general public.
