Description
The distinction between artist’s studies and pornography has always been a subject of debate — often influenced by cultural, legal, and subjective perspectives.
Generally marketed at a time when going to jail for violating the Comstock Law was very real, “artist’s studies” aimed to explore and represent the human form for educational and aesthetic purposes. As we all know, pornography seeks to elicit sexual arousal. Or at least we “know it when we see it”, right?
This is what I love about vintage cheesecake smut, especially the pictures / magazines packaged and sold as “artist’s studies”. This example even includes a fold-out — “lesson number three” — “for artists, photographers, art students, sculptors and professional models…not to be sold to minors or other than the above [mentioned]. Scarce — I’ve never seen another instance.
